The project titled “Gender Equality in TV Series”, which has been carried out by TUSIAD, was announced to the public with a meeting on March 5, 2018 in Istanbul.
The opening speeches were given by TUSIAD President Erol Bilecik and TUSIAD Social Gender Equality Study Group Head Oya Ünlü Kızıl.
Kadir Has University Faculty of Communication members, Assoc. Dr. İrem İnceoğlu and Assist. Prof. Elif Akçalı announced the results of the “Gender Equality in TV Series Research” and then a panel was held with the participation of the stakeholders of the TV series sector.
Association of Turkish Advertisers (RVD) President Ahmet Pura, Television and Cinema Movie Producers Society (TESİYAP) President Birol Güven, Chairperson of Actors' Union Demet Akbağ, Screenwriters' Association (SENDER) President Meriç Demiray, TUSIAD Social Gender Equality Study Group Head Oya Ünlü Kızıl and director Zeynep Günay Tan made suggestions about the actions to be taken from the viewpoint of stakeholders.
Within the scope of the project, the following five principles were adopted to eliminate gender stereotypes in TV series:
- Increasing the physical appearance, character, emotion and professional diversity of women and men,
- Distributing responsibilities regarding life, work and home in a balanced way,
- Not normalizing violence,
- Using language that supports gender equality,
- Ensuring and enhancing the visibility of role model characters
